Mung beans were easy the one time I tried them, sometime back in primary school. My mum had bought some for us to sprout, but I rescued the biggest few from the salad and set them up in pots of compost on a windowsill. I seem to remember they rather took over the window, but they flowered and produced pods from which I harvested a little handful of beans. I hope Garden Boy gets as much satisfaction as I did with his harvest!

Some very sensible advice there! I'm an experienced gardener myself, but I have recently been re-inspired by A)getting into Blogging, and B)the advent of a grand-child, who has already become very interested in my gardening antics. You can see her on her Mum's blog "Mellow Mummy".

Dwarf French Beans are very rewarding. A couple of years ago ours thrived despite being planted in very dry sunny stony thin soil with very little watering. In current garden in better soil they produced even more prolifically for a longer season.
They are definitely worth growing - make sure you get Dwarf - much easier because they don't need any sort of staking or support.

Hi - the clear plastic will probably make all the difference provided you can anchor it securely. Plus it will keep the birds from eating all the seed! I think the area we want to seed is too big for plastic (the whole of the former front path plus largish area of levelled out hilly part) so we'll have to wait until it gets a bit warmer. Hope you get lots of lovely green shoots xxxx

Thanks for the tips re. grass seeds. I think we might give it a try early. There are enough seeds in our packet to cover the space a few times over so if it doesn't work we can try again. Laying clear plastic over the top to keep it warm is a good idea. I'll be happy with just a small amount of growth - if it makes the mud patch slightly less muddy!

Garden Mum - I don't think seeds will germinate until weather and soil a lot warmer. Wait at least until March (preferably hang on to April if you can) - otherwise the seed will all have been wasted. On the other hand - if you really can't wait let me know if successful because we have newly cleared areas waiting for grass seed here too.
